Excerpts from the Lars John Redberg Diaries of 1909 - 1912 of Life in South Tillamook County especially of Oretown, Oregon.
Edna Redberg very kindly excerpted these interesting portions of the Lars John Redberg Diaries and provided them to NVMS. Nestucca Valley Middle School students typed these excerpts during the fall of 2002 as part of their technology classes. Note that the complete diaries of Lars John Redberg spanning many years are in the Pioneer Museum in Tillamook, Oregon. They were donated by Erwin and Edna Redberg.
The following diary entries were typed and edited by Dean Bones. Page 11 - January 1909 - October 5, 1909Nov. 27, 1910 - continued from the previous page - The pony was got out, and Mr. Livingston swam out of the deep hole, into which he was carried, to the bank, where Ole pulled him out. He could not have gotten out alone. He got dry clothes at Steinmassle's where we had dinner.
Nov. 28, 1910 - Ole has commenced his new addition to his house. Irve Smith is helping him.
Nov. 29, 1910 - Ole & Irve helped me put windows in my barn today.
Nov. 30, 1910 - We helped Mr. Porter raise the timbers for the new addition to his barn.
Dec. 2, 1910 - Irve Smith, Ole and I put cloth, paper, and oil cloth on Father & Mother's kitchen. Was Ralph's first birthday. (?)
Dec. 6, 1910 - Mr. Porter, Ole and I went to Tillamook.
Dec. 7, 1910 - Today we made a contract with Tillamook County Court that we are to build and grade what is known as the Rock Road.
Dec. 8, 1910 - We arrived back home this evening. Our new Home Comfort Range came to Cloverdale on the evening of the 5th of this month. We brought it home this evening. Tom Wilson's little boy was buried today!
Dec. 15, 1910 - Rained most of the day. Ole and I went up to Livingston & Mathers and got 2 loads of household effects and started for Tillamook. Mr. Livingston had a load on his wagon too. We all stayed at Cloverdale this first night. Was 7:30 when we got to Cloverdale.
Dec. 16, 1910 - Rained hard all day. We arrived at Tillamook at 4 o'clock this evening.
Dec. 17, 1910 - We started on our way from home at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Hazel Scherzinger came down with me. We stayed at Ocean Way about 7:30 this night.
Dec. 18, 1910 - Arrived home about 4:30 this evening. We had about 5000 pounds of barley founder and other things on the 2 wagons.
Dec. 21, 1910 - Elma is canning most of a beef for Father & Mother. Ole and I butchered it yesterday.
Dec. 22, 1910 - Ole hauled a load of shakes from Parker's place. We hauled road plank too.
Dec. 26, 1910 - One of my cows got in a tide slough on my tideland. Ole & I found her this evening.
